Finding the right grass for a shaded garden

Shade had made it difficult to establish grass in this garden. The lawn stayed thin, with weeds and moss taking hold in the gaps.

The existing grass was cleared and the ground levelled with a 70/30 lawn-sand mix. Shade-tolerant grass seed and pre-seed fertiliser were then applied to give the new lawn a better start in these conditions.

A sprinkler and timer were set up to support regular watering while the grass established. Claire’s review below describes the change in her garden.
